For any new linux user, they should find someone they can contact when they can't get the
system to boot.

The distro the new user should use is the one recommended by the person they will turn to
for help. Same with which desktop environment to use. Use the one the support person is the
most comfortable supporting.

Once they are comfortable with linux, then they can learn more by experimenting with other
desktop environments and then other distributions.
