The vendor warranty of my father's PC is either close to 
expire or just expired, so I will backup and wipe windows 10 
soon (I'm also fed up with the GB of net traffic consumed : 
he websurfs far less than myself, and ends up having higher 
consumptions, it's really annoying).

It is a machine about 1y old, with 12 GB ram and 1 TB hdd 
(revolving), the CPU ... well can't remember (the brand is 
ACER). Alas I dunno which graphics card it has. Likely 
integrated in the MB but dunno the brand.


Which distro (among the list I have just tried, see below) 
would you recommend me to install for him ?

I prefer to listen to some sb's else advice as I am a bit 
too Debian-"biased" (with Debian I feel really comfortable, 
but this does not necessarily mean my father too would feel 
the same : he knows very very very little about PC's in 
general, and is not even confident with win10 ... which is 
not bad, maybe, but just to understand he needs the things 
really easy).

The install and maintenance will be done by myself from time 
to time if necessary.

The restricted pre-selection (other choices can be 
considered if really well argumented, no prejudice)

Debian, MX, Manjaro, Mageia, Fedora, LMDE-Mint family

DE : XFCE, LXDE, Cinnamon, Mate, KDE

(not in the order)

NO GNOME or gnome like
NO UBUNTU or alike


I try to put down some parameters for making a decision

To be somewhat "windows-like" in the aspect (I mean a 
windows "classic shell", not Metro-shit, I immediately 
restored win10 to the most win7 like appearence).
KDE as the DE ? (I don't use it, but this is not a great 
problem. Time ago I recall KDE was described (Aragorn ?) as 
the most similar to win in the exterior appearance, and also 
very configurable ... but, not using it, I could well not be 
able to exploit this flexibility as to make it even more 
similar to win)

The distro is to be among the most stable (up-to-dateness 
not really required) and possibly not to often pushing 
updates (for this  I tend to give fewer points to Manjaro 
and Fedora, the former is a "rolling" release and updates 
really often and a lot, the latter tend to be very far 
fetched too). Debian gains a lot here.

EASINESS of use : by far the most single parameter of heavy 
weight for the decision. Personally I have found good 
preinstalled set of accessories from MX, Mageja and Mint, so 
more user friendly to work out of the box and with deeply 
tested and well coordinated set of accessories

what DE is really more windows like ?
