To address the splitting hypothesis, regardless of the channel of HDMI, the drivers are still engineered to boil from the same stew of the GPU so to speak. Separated HDMI outputs do not constitute separated audio outputs to the drivers which somehow taxes the GPU less (at least the official ones) nVidia drivers still think they can do sound over DisplayPort according to Windows

This isn't the days of yore where it made sense to offset CPU cycles to a discreet sound card as to avoid doing so with onboard motherboard whereas your taxing the northbridge (or maybe it was the southbridge, can't remember)

GPUs even within the last 15 years have no issue running concurrent sound streaming along video output even at the slightest. I've been doing it since my GTX 790, then a 1080 GTX, and now a 3080 TI running multiple displays (two 1080p screens and one ultra wide 1440p screen) across all of them. Not a peep in performance (I get 150 FPS in PUBG on Ultra settings routing its sound to my headphones while the HDMI sound goes to the TV for the missus and her streaming television) The drivers are pretty snappy these days and audio delivery really isn't taxing anymore

If there are any performance drawbacks I can assure you it is negligible in any sort of practical measure
