He guys and girls... I've had my D90 for a while-ish now.. and was flicking through the manual and it mentions Camera Control Pro 2, so i downloaded a copy of it and I'm using it as a trial for now... but i have installed it on both Vista and XP, and its saying "No camera was detected" is there any way I can fix this? I did some reading on PTP Driver creation msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms792271.aspx But I'm still not sure what I'm meant to be doing... Ive researched it every where and yet to find a working answer... I'm hoping that some one here can help me... please! I've heard in threads about changing it from Mass Storage to PTP or something... but there is nothing I can see in the Menu to support this.. I'm so lost.. Grrrr Also to add.. I've noticed when I plug it into my Vista OS... the "PC" blinks on and off in the top right of the display about 4 times... but then remains on the normal screen. I installed the software and I connected the USB cable to my D90. My laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium (64 bit) was recognizing the camera but I was still getting "No camera was detected" from CCP2. After hours of searching and reading hints about PTP settings and possible driver issues, it turns out I just needed to upgrade CCP2 to the latest version and then everything was fine. o The trial version installs version 2.0 which is what didn't work for me. After you install, go under the CCP2 Help menu and select "Check for Software Updates..." o I ran this and it updated me to version 2.6 (as of Nov 2009). o The next time I tried the software with the camera, everything worked fine. The camera was recognized right away by CCP2 and then you can start using Live View from the laptop and your pictures save straight to your hard drive instead of the chip in the camera. It's really cool to be able to see right away if you got a good shot or not instead of relying on the camera's screen. A couple other notes o The website for the trial version calls out that only 32 bit versions of Windows are supported but I haven't had issues yet on 64 bit Vista with SP1. o The D90 does not have the option to set a "USB" preference under the camera menus. Google it and you'll find that the D90 currently only works as PTP so you don't have a menu option to set the USB to anything else. Bullets: I hope you finally got it to work... ages ago(permalink) The D50, being an SLR, has the sensor covered up by the Mirror when composing the shot. So, you cannot "see them live as you shoot", as the sensor cannot see anything ! Therefore, the D50 cannot send anything to the PC/MAC. This aside, you can download a trial version of Nikon Camera Control Pro ( from your Nikon site) that will allow you to remote control the camera ... Capture NX was designed by Nikon's new software partner and it is unlikely Nikon would want to tie sales of their own software to those of the partner . I've used the trial version of the Camera Control and it worked great for what I needed. One person on the camera, a second on the computer doing immediate post processing for out the door prints. ages ago(permalink) As you state in a comment above, that all you want to do is shoot timelapses, rather than relying on a software solution you could always try something like the gentLED-Auto. Their website claims D60 compatibility and I also found this video where the poster says they used a trial of Nikon's Camera Control Pro 2 software, but have since purchased the gentLED-Auto controller to save them lugging their laptop around (and also the gentLED-Auto is a fraction of the cost of the Nikon software). You need the USB cable that came with the camera plus an extension cable. Then you can use Camera Control Pro from Nikon (has a trial period), Lightroom, qdsrldashboard or ControlMyNikon software to instantly transfer and view the photos on your laptop. I'm trying to find appropriate camera control software to use for the eclipse. After sorting through the various software I've seen mentioned to what is compatible with my setup, I am down to DigicamControl (free), BackyardNikon (30 day trial or $50), or Eclipse Orchestrator (free version limited to 0.3 fps or $109.) Eclipse Orchestrator sounds like the best option, but the low framerate on the free version seems like it would be a dealbreaker. I'm also reluctant to pay over $100 for software I will likely only use once. Could anyone provide some advice for me here? If I purchase Eclipse Orchestrator Pro ($109) and want to control the shutter by serial cable, would I also have to purchase a shutter control adapter and corresponding cable? After playing with the various software I decided to stick with DigicamControl for controlling my camera, but found a workaround for the USB speed limit - my IR remote shutter release still works when the camera is connected to a PC and is not subject to USB limitations.
