While you may not be a fan of the heart pumping, adrenaline boosting feeling of a roller coaster's twists and turns, for others, it's the best part of the warmer months or even a core memory of their childhood.


But recently, two roller coasters hit the headlines for less than awesome reasons. Riders at a Wisconsin festival were stuck upside down for around three hours after a mechanical failure. And a North Carolina man spotted a massive crack in a coaster support beam after his family had been on the ride.


The freedom to act wildly is one reason why millions of people flock to amusement parks every year. Roller coasters are a major part of this attraction, and the people who run the parks keep looking for ways to make coasters taller, faster, and scarier.


Genes, passed on from your parents and ancestors, may contribute to how you feel about riding roller coasters. However, past experiences and even the friends you hang out with also can influence your preference.


I'm saying this because I want Disney World to succeed, and I know Disney World is a family place, but Universal is creeping hard, and the one thing I keep hearing other than like Harry Potter, and slightly more affordable is thrill rides. Disney World should continue to be a place for all, but I really wish it would get one roller coaster that really pushed the limited, similar in intensity to hulk and velocicoaster.






It's something Disney is lacking, and it's not something that would be radically expensive, and the worst thing for people that don't like it is not to ride it. It would also be really cool to have a really intense ride with Disney's attention to detail and theming. In my opinion, this ride should go in Hollywood Studios, while it already has a looping roller coaster, it would not fit at all in Epcot or AK, and MK should not have a ride of this intensity. They can slap an IP on it if they want, honestly for this I'm totally fine with it, and it would 100% convince a decent amount of people to spend more time at Disney.


On this sunny Saturday in June, I will become a person who rides roller coasters. Our backwards-in-circles ride in the wooden boat is meant to be our warm-up, and indeed, all the four- and five-year-olds disembarking look happy. I seem to be the only one who is shaking. It is going to be a long day.


Our first proper coaster together is an adorable little Alpine train. It is the oldest ride in the amusement park, and so short they run it twice before letting people off. The locomotive pulls us along a few gentle curves through the canopy of trees before going into a dark diamond mine with bright flashing lights. I scream most of the time, as does my son. When we leave the ride, he is yelping with happiness, flailing his arms like Kermit the Frog. One thing my fear has deprived me of, I see now, is the chance to share this silly wild joy with my son.


Fun fact. The Cliffhanger Roller Coaster opened at Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park on June 15, 2012. The Italian-made coaster was purchased from an amusement park in Branson, Missouri. To reassemble it required 1,400 new bolts, including 700 special bolts, 14 inches long with metric threads, used to hold the sections of track together. The same weekend the Cliffhanger debuted, the Mine Wheel, a ferris wheel ride also opened at the park.


I think people who make it their business to ride the most terrifying roller coaster are thrill seekers and see this as something fun to do. They may tend to be more adventurous and risk-takers. Roller coasters allow you to let loose in a controlled environment. Most individuals enjoy the rides at amusement parks and like watching others ride the scariest roller coasters.


There are also individuals that do not want to relinquish that control at all. They may choose to take risks in other areas. People who do not enjoy roller coasters may have had an unpleasant experience or seen or heard a news story that convinced them that roller coasters are not safe. When individuals are able to conquer their fear of roller coasters they generally enjoy the ride.


I believe people who enjoy roller coasters find the whole experience attractive, but there are others that have their favorite parts of a roller coaster ride. Being propelled at high speeds, dropping several feet and looping around and around all in a matter of seconds while simultaneously screaming and laughing intrigues some people.


The psychological effects of riding a roller coaster are going to depend if you are a fan of roller coasters or not. Our fight or flight response is activated which signals the rush of adrenaline. Those who are in favor of roller coasters tend to experience joy, happiness, excitement and satisfaction as this is what they wanted to feel. Therefore the psychological effect is positive. The pleasure principle is quite content.


Persons that are thrill seekers and enjoy roller coasters will likely seek out the scariest, tallest or fastest roller coaster to ride as a way to challenge themselves and chase after that adrenaline rush. Roller coasters allow you feel as though you are doing something dangerous and death-defying, but in a pretty safe way.

I always make a full day of it, because I want to get all my roller coaster riding fun during the day, and leave my evening for haunt experiences. And I have also seen that the lines for rides are MUCH shorter the first few hours after a park opens than later in the evening. So my typical plan of attack, at least when visiting Worlds of Fun, is to ride all the thrill rides first and then eat and be ready for Halloween fun after the sun sets.


That was pretty much my plan this time around at Worlds of Fun. There was always plenty of people at the park during the day, but the lines are much, much shorter (except for the water raft ride), so I was able to get my adrenaline thrills done fairly early. So by the time night fell, I was ready to get my Halloween on. Just like last year, I purchased a Fright Pass and a Skeleton Key pass. Like I said, I hate waiting in line, so anything that can cut into that, I am usually willing to pay. It really does make a tremendous difference in the amount of line waiting, and I was able to see all of the Halloween haunts in only about three to four hours.
