You can now install the web version of Yammer as a progressive web app (PWA) in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. After you install the web version of Yammer as a progressive web app, it will work like any stand-alone desktop experience.


Even though the experience is similar to a standalone desktop app, the PWA version of Yammer is still connected to the browser it was downloaded from. See instructions below for how to install this from various modern browsers.

Stay connected to updates in Yammer by turning on desktop notifications, which provide a pop-up notification on your desktop when someone   mentions you in a conversation or you receive an announcement. See Manage Yammer desktop notifications.


There once was a Yammer extension for the Google Chrome browser that was introduced in 2013, but it seems to have disappeared from the Google Play store. Microsoft's announcement stated that the new Yammer desktop apps for Mac and Windows "will have all the features people know and love about the Yammer browser experience and additional OS notifications to keep you updated on your groups' Yammer activity."


The current Yammer Desktop Notifier app for Windows gets installed on desktops and shows up as an icon in the Windows system tray. It's designed to alert users who may not visit a Yammer portal that new social media messages have been posted.


In March, Microsoft will also rebrand the existing Communities app for Outlook on the desktop and the web to Viva Engage. The name change will be automatic, and the new Viva Engage app in Outlook will continue to provide access to conversations and community updates.

The desktop app is a native client for Mac and Windows with the full functionality of Yammer. Along with streamlined log in and SSO support, the app integrates with native operating system capabilities such as notifications, shortcuts, and launch on startup.

When you run the MSI installer, the Yammer Machine-Wide Installer is installed on the client machine, and it installs the Yammer Desktop app for users the next time they log in to their machine.


But for users of the Yammer applications for Windows and Mac, Yammer is still a window into the pre-COVID time when "Classic Yammer" was the user interface for everyone. New Yammer never made it to the desktop apps!






A Progressive Web App is an app built using common web technologies such as HTML, CSS, and Javascript. PWAs can be used by Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome and have support for push notifications, offline mode, and installation onto the desktop. When launched, PWAs work within their own windows apart from the browser.


Microsoft is continuing to support the Skype for Business mobile apps for iOS and Android, as well as the versions for desktop Windows and Mac. Microsoft's guidance for Windows Phone users is to access Skype for Business, Teams, and Yammer via their web browser.


In related news, Microsoft also noted last week that it will be removing a number of Yammer features in May 2018. The company is getting rid of Yammer's native org chart feature; its recent activity module on the home page; and the Yammer desktop notifier applicaiton.


Late August 2022. Rollout of the new Engage tab, which will replace the existing Communities section, will start in late August for all versions of Microsoft Teams, including web apps, desktop clients and mobile apps.


The Communities app for Teams will be rebranded Viva Engage, deployable immediately into the Teams desktop, web, and mobile apps. For existing users of the Communities app for Teams, no change will be needed from admins. Current Yammer customers will be able to deploy and pin Viva Engage on the left rail of Teams through the Teams Admin Center. Storylines will open for public preview in late August too.

If users in your organization are actively using the current Yammer Desktop app or plan to start using it soon we want to make sure you are informed of these upcoming changes. When the new installable Desktop Application is released we will have in-app banners to help users transition to the new Desktop experience. Up until retirement on June 30th, 2021 we will support the existing experience and address high priority items. After June 30th, 2021 if users open the current Yammer Desktop app they will see a blocking banner with information about the new desktop experiences available to them.


Our value proposition is that we go to companies and we say, you have already invested in these tools, you own them,but your not getting value out of them because they are too disjointed and there is no connectivity between the experiences of the desktop and the mobile. Technically this value proposition begins with SharePoint, but equally there is interest in presence awareness integrated."


We use yammer a lot as an internal discussion solution. Whilst within business units and projects/accounts Teams is used and is definitely more feature rich. For company wide discussions (250,000 staff) teams should be far too cumbersome to manage effectively.

For me Yammer is much more of a large scale enterprise tool.


The new Yammer desktop app was recently released as a progressive web app (PWA) which makes it wonderfully simple to install. This app replaced the legacy desktop notifier, which was popular with people who preferred Yammer to behave like a desktop application, rather than the web application it is.


Yammer is a free service that any employee within a company can sign up for. You just go to www.yammer.com and sign up by entering your corporate email address. You will be sent an email back to confirm the address. The entire sign up process just takes a few minutes.


To access your new company social network on Yammer you need to login to www.Yammer.com, once you have an account set up you will be taken directly to your company network. Another, easier way to stay connected to your Yammer network is to download the Yammer desktop and mobile apps. This way you can engage with your enterprise network without having to open up the network page in a browser. Now you can post statuses, send (instant) messages to people who are online, share files and easily check the latest posts directly from your desktop or your mobile. The Yammer desktop app is available for both Windows PCs and Macs and the mobile app is available for a wide range of mobiles including iPhones, Blackberrys, Android devices and Windows mobile devices.


In other Yammer news this month, Microsoft added a tab for the social networking app to the mobile version of Microsoft Teams, its team collaboration app. The company previously added a Yammer tab to the Teams desktop client. The sidebars let users access Yammer's news feeds and groups without leaving Teams.


You use Remote Desktop to connect to a remote PC running Windows Professional or to virtual apps and desktops made available to you via Enterprise and Windows server. The iOS app is designed to support multi-touch without introducing additional complexity.


These is the browser-based version of Microsoft Office that includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. The Office Online applications can be a great alternative to installing the desktop version of Microsoft Office, or it can be used when you are away from your primary computer. This cloud storage and file sharing application can be accessed via Outlook on the web or the OneDrive for Business desktop application. It allows users to upload files to the cloud, then either share with contacts or keep them private. Learn more.


Not in most cases. In most cases you will continue to use your desktop Microsoft Office applications, and they will work the same way they do now. However, you will be able to also log in to your campus Office 365 account and use Office Online to access these applications. You may want to do this if you are away from your home and office and do not have your institutional laptop with you.
