You can now install the web version of Yammer as a progressive web app (PWA) in Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox. After you install the web version of Yammer as a progressive web app, it will work like any stand-alone desktop experience. Even though the experience is similar to a standalone desktop app, the PWA version of Yammer is still connected to the browser it was downloaded from. Microsoft's announcement stated that the new Yammer desktop apps for Mac and Windows "will have all the features people know and love about the Yammer browser experience and additional OS notifications to keep you updated on your groups' Yammer activity." The current Yammer Desktop Notifier app for Windows gets installed on desktops and shows up as an icon in the Windows system tray. It's designed to alert users who may not visit a Yammer portal that new social media messages have been posted. In March, Microsoft will also rebrand the existing Communities app for Outlook on the desktop and the web to Viva Engage. The name change will be automatic, and the new Viva Engage app in Outlook will continue to provide access to conversations and community updates. When you run the MSI installer, the Yammer Machine-Wide Installer is installed on the client machine, and it installs the Yammer Desktop app for users the next time they log in to their machine. But for users of the Yammer applications for Windows and Mac, Yammer is still a window into the pre-COVID time when "Classic Yammer" was the user interface for everyone. Rollout of the new Engage tab, which will replace the existing Communities section, will start in late August for all versions of Microsoft Teams, including web apps, desktop clients and mobile apps. The Communities app for Teams will be rebranded Viva Engage, deployable immediately into the Teams desktop, web, and mobile apps. For existing users of the Communities app for Teams, no change will be needed from admins. This app replaced the legacy desktop notifier, which was popular with people who preferred Yammer to behave like a desktop application, rather than the web application it is. Yammer is a free service that any employee within a company can sign up for. You just go to www.yammer.com and sign up by entering your corporate email address. In other Yammer news this month, Microsoft added a tab for the social networking app to the mobile version of Microsoft Teams, its team collaboration app. The company previously added a Yammer tab to the Teams desktop client. The Office Online applications can be a great alternative to installing the desktop version of Microsoft Office, or it can be used when you are away from your primary computer. To access Office Online: This cloud storage and file sharing application can be accessed via Outlook on the web or the OneDrive for Business desktop application. In most cases you will continue to use your desktop Microsoft Office applications, and they will work the same way they do now. However, you will be able to also log in to your campus Office 365 account and use Office Online to access these applications.
