John - I asked in a private email if you wanted my Tbird info and I 
didn't hear from you.  Maybe you missed that email. At any rate, I use 
gmail for my 'real' email, and these settings work for me when I 
configured a Thunderbird account 'Eternal Newsgroup' without going thru 
your hassles each time:

Outgoing Server (SMTP): Use default server

Edit SMTP Server Settings:

Description: Eternal Newsgroup
Server Name: smtp.gmail.com
Port: 465
Connection Security: SSL/TLS
Authentication Method: OAuth2
Username: **your real email user name eg: [email protected]**
