Euro and Pound system in register memo field?

Anyone know how to enter the Euro and Pound symbol in a memo field 
comment. I tried hold the ALT key and entering "0218" (with and without 
the num lock on) as suggested in a couple of web comments I found, but 
my Windows system just 'dings' when entering the first '0' in the field. 
  Nothing gets entered.
