Chef Loi was one of four chefs selected by the European Union delegation of=
 the United Nations to represent their countries at the first Taste of Euro=
pe NYC event at Eataly; she traveled to Taranto, Italy with Harvard Univers=
ity to present their collective findings on the health benefits of the Medi=
terranean Diet to the University of Bari School of Medicine at a conference=
 on the Apulian Lifestyle. Chef Loi also traveled to Indianapolis with Harv=
ard University to continue her work on the real-life applications of the Gr=
eek/Mediterranean Diet with the active firefighters of the Indianapolis Fir=
e Department.

In August 2020, Chef Loi was a key presenter at the Menus of Change Leaders=
hip Summit, a huge event for chefs, culinary industry professionals, and a =
broad cross section of academics presented by the Culinary Institute of Ame=
rica and Harvard University's TH Chan School of Public Health. This confere=
nce focusing on the Plant-Forward Kitchen is slated to be the basis and gui=
dance for the next decade in consumer culinary trends and food evolution th=
rough 2030.

These regional accolades recognize chefs who set high standards in their cu=
linary skills and leadership abilities, while contributing positively to th=
eir broader community. The following Chicago chefs have been nominated for =

The song was an inspiration for the 1969 film also named Alice's Restaurant=
, which took numerous liberties with the story. The work has become Guthrie=
's signature song and he has periodically re-released it with updated lyric=
s. In 2017, it was selected for preservation in the National Recording Regi=
stry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or arti=
stically significant".[3]



Guthrie recounts events that took place in 1965 (two years prior at the tim=
e of the original recording), when he and a friend spent Thanksgiving Day a=
t a deconsecrated church on the outskirts of Stockbridge, Massachusetts, wh=
ich their friends Alice and Ray Brock had been using as a home. As a favor =
to them, Guthrie and the friend volunteered to take their large accumulatio=
n of garbage to the local dump in their VW Microbus, not realizing until th=
ey arrived there that the dump would be closed for the holiday. They eventu=
ally noticed another pile of trash that had previously been dumped off a cl=
iff near a side road, and added theirs to the accumulation before returning=
 to the church for Thanksgiving dinner.

The next morning, the church received a phone call from the local policeman=
, Officer Obie, saying that an envelope in the garbage pile had been traced=
 back to them. Guthrie, stating "I cannot tell a lie" and with tongue in ch=
eek, confessed that he "put that envelope underneath" the garbage. He and h=
is friend drove to the police station, expecting a verbal reprimand and to =
be required to clean up the garbage, but they were instead arrested, handcu=
ffed, and taken to the scene of the crime. There, Obie and a crew of police=
 officers from the surrounding areas collected extensive forensic evidence =
of the litter, including "twenty-seven 8-by-10 color glossy pictures with c=
ircles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what e=
ach one was, to be used as evidence against us" amid a media circus of loca=
l media trying to get news stories on the littering. The young men were bri=
efly jailed, with Obie taking drastic precautions to prevent Guthrie from e=
scaping or committing suicide. After a few hours, Alice bailed them out and=
 held another Thanksgiving dinner.

Guthrie cited the long-form monologues of Lord Buckley and Bill Cosby, and =
the movies of Charlie Chaplin, as inspirations for the song's lyrics, and a=
 number of different musicians (in particular Mississippi John Hurt) as ins=
pirations for the Piedmont fingerstyle guitar accompaniment, noting that he=
 took about "two seconds" to come up with the accompaniment because he want=
ed something easy to play mindlessly while narrating the story.[7][8] The s=
ong was written as the events happened over the course of approximately one=
 year;[9] it grew out of a simple joke riff Guthrie had been working on in =
1965 and 1966 before he appeared before the draft board (the opening was or=
iginally written as "you can hide from Obanhein at Alice's restaurant", whi=
ch is how the restaurant got tied into the original story), and he later ad=
ded his experience before the draft board to create the song as it is known=
 today.[10] Additional portions of the song were written during one of Guth=
rie's many stays with the English songwriter and music journalist Karl Dall=
as and his family in London.[11][12] Guthrie sent a demo recording of the s=
ong to his father Woody Guthrie on his deathbed; it was, according to a "fa=
mily joke", the last thing Woody heard before he died in October 1967.[10] =
Because of the song's length, Guthrie never expected it to be released, bec=
ause such extended monologues were extremely rare in an era when singles we=
re typically less than three minutes.[7]

After the release of the original album, Guthrie continued to perform the s=
ong in concert, regularly revising and updating the lyrics. In 1969, for in=
stance, he performed a 20-minute rendition of the song that, instead of the=
 original narrative, told a fictional story of how Russian and Chinese mili=
tary operatives attempted to weaponize "multicolored rainbow roaches" they =
had found at Alice's restaurant, and the Lyndon Johnson administration orch=
estrated a plan for the nation to defend itself. A recording of this versio=
n titled "Alice: Before Time Began" was released in 2009 on a CD distribute=
d by Guthrie's Rising Son Records label; another recording of this version,=
 titled "The Alice's Restaurant Multicolored Rainbow Roach Affair", was als=
o released on that label.[22]

In later years, the Guthrie Center became a folk music venue, hosting a Thu=
rsday evening hootenanny as well as the Troubadour Concert series annually =
from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Musical guests have included John Gorka, To=
m Paxton, Ellis Paul, Tom Rush, The Highwaymen folk group and Arlo Guthrie.=
 The Troubadour series helps to support the church's free community lunch p=
rogram which is held at the church every Wednesday at noon. On Thanksgiving=
, the church hosts a "Thanksgiving dinner that can't be beat" for the local=
 community. The annual "Garbage Trail Walk", retracing the steps of Arlo an=
d folksinger Rick Robbins (as told in the song), raises money for Huntingto=
n's disease research.
