Al-Akhdari was not only a scholar of Islamic law, but also a poet, logician=

from Yemen. He studied with various teachers in Algeria and Tunisia, and tr=

Al-Akhdari wrote several poems on different subjects, such as grammar, rhet=
oric, theology, jurisprudence and Sufism. His most famous poem is Al-Sullam=
 al-murawnaq fi 'ilm al-mantiq (The Ornamented Ladder into the Science of L=
ogic), which is a versification of Al-Abhari's Kitab al-Isaghuji, a treatis=
e on Aristotelian logic. The poem explains the principles of logic and how =
they can be used to support the Islamic creed and jurisprudence. The poem i=
s widely studied in Muslim schools and madrasas as an introduction to logic=

One of the poems that al-Akhdari wrote on jurisprudence is Al-Mukhtasar fi =
'l-fiqh al-maliki (The Abridged Treatise on Maliki Jurisprudence), which su=
mmarizes the main rulings of the Maliki school on purification, prayer, fas=
ting, zakat, pilgrimage and jihad. The poem consists of 316 verses and is d=
ivided into 17 chapters. The poem is also known as Al-Akhdari or Al-Mukhtas=
ar al-Akhdari. It is one of the most popular and widely taught texts on Mal=
iki fiqh in West Africa and beyond. Al-Akhdari also wrote a prose commentar=
y on his own poem, as well as another poem on jurisprudence called Al-Mursh=
id al-mu'in 'ala al-daruri min 'ulum al-din (The Helpful Guide to the Essen=
tials of Religious Sciences).

Another poem that al-Akhdari wrote on theology is Al-Risala al-qayrawaniyya=
 fi 'l-'aqida al-islamiyya (The Qayrawani Letter on Islamic Creed), which e=
xplains the main tenets of the Ash'ari school of theology and refutes the a=
rguments of the Mu'tazila, the Jahmiyya, the Khawarij and the Shi'a. The po=
em consists of 144 verses and is divided into four sections. The poem is al=
so known as Al-Qayrawaniyya or Al-Risala al-Akhdariyya. It is one of the mo=
st influential and widely studied texts on Ash'ari theology in North Africa=
 and West Africa. Al-Akhdari also wrote a prose commentary on his own poem,=
 as well as another poem on theology called Al-Durra al-bahiyya fi 'l-'aqid=
a al-ash'ariyya (The Splendid Pearl on Ash'ari Creed).
