That is one of the many values of version control.

Another interesting thing is that if I make a change to a file and at the
same time you make a change to a file, we should be able to consolidate both
changes when the files are checked in.  (Not all CS do this, and there are
some disadvantages, but it can be better when you have coarse granularity
because there's a lot of stuff in a file.)
