The Khazar Empire (8th-9th Century CE): A powerful medieval Turkic 
kingdom located between the Black and Caspian Seas, covering parts of 
modern-day southern Russia and Ukraine. The ruling elite and some of the 
population converted to Rabbinic Judaism. Historians agree the 
motivation was largely geopolitical: adopting Judaism allowed the 
Khazars to maintain strict political independence and neutrality while 
avoiding the influence of rival expanding empires, specifically the 
Christian Byzantine Empire and the Islamic Abbasid Caliphates
