DOS 1 and 2 were kinda capable of being absorbed. Really weren't THAT different from CP/M. Of course I was much younger then. Beyond that ... There's a story about M$ ... there was an Old Guy there who could hold entire systems in his head - thus knowing how tweaking 'X' would affect 'Y' and 'Z'. He was there through Win2k ... and then retired. From then on, NOBODY really knew how everything in the system worked - and it SHOWS :-) Linus can MAYBE hold the whole Linux kernel in his head ... maybe ... but it's a MUCH bigger and more complex kernel that it was when I was buying the system on floppies. There used to be a Linux magazine with a feature by "Zach the Kernel Guy". Each month he'd doc how the newly-recruited newbies would want to completely re-tweak the kernel - and thus TRASH like 90% of all ops/utils/etc in favor of their great 'new vision'. Linus would slap 'em down hard. So, what happens when Linus burns out ??? Oh well, some of the BSDs are pretty good now ... STILL like Win2k ... have it on a VM somewhere. Ultra-functional, no BS, no 'candy'.
