I don’t know the specific issue John mentions.  Usually it would involve
a hardware issue, for example https://lwn.net/Articles/674940/ - a
hardware bug for sure but easy to trigger from software.

Looking more widely than typical PCs, some SoCs have one-time or
few-time programmable boot configuration; reprogramming that to an
invalid configuration would brick the device.
