In any case, destroy them.” Yep. Still hope that, somewhere, backup copies of all that stuff were safely stashed away in an obscure desert cave. Ptolemy-II ordered that any ships coming into Alexandria with books ... the books HAD to be delivered to the library to be COPIED before the originals were returned. So, the concept of 'backups' wasn't alien even back then. Islam is made to be more radical/purist/evangelical than even Christianity. EARLY Islamic civ was high on its successes and this tended to help the sciences. But once the advances stalled, POWER was retained by getting really fundy.
