When anaesthetic was invented, some objected to it on religious
grounds -- because it would let women experience childbirth without
pain. Because there is something in Genesis about how Adam and Eve
were cursed when they were thrown out of the Garden of Eden, and part
of the curse was that women had to suffer during childbirth.
