It can be attacked from any direction. The sheer scale of a missile defense system is, well, just impractical. Something new/different would be needed - giant, really giant, lasers or something. Alas enemies would try to disable such facilities just before their main attack. You only need a FEW routes into the US heartland ..... Oh, peace & love and universal disarmament ... it's NOT HAPPENING folks. The species isn't wired that way.
