Who's gonna PAY for them ? Just to cover the US
mainland we'd be talking maybe a few THOUSAND
of those 'small' lasers. X-percent will be out
of service at any given time.

Current 'directed energy' devices really just
ain't so good. Fuckin' atmosphere ......

When we have a permanent moon colony, put one
THERE to fend off the Chinese or whomever. In
a vac they WILL work well.

Oh, you don't have to directly hit any major
   cities - just plop a fallout-enhanced bomb
   somewhere nearby. Maybe worse ...

   Um ... no - alas .....

Without kinda literal Star Trek force-shield tech
countries will remain fairly vulnerable. Plenty of
promises, but no realistic solutions other than to
   prevent The War from happening.
