Well the issue of broadcast traffic rears its ugly head if you have 
10,000 machines on the same subnet and Ethernet.

AND if you use e,g. OSPF and multiple routers, you can build in 
redundancy of routing

Personally I wouldn't want more than about 100 machines on any active 
subnet. Its nice to have sections you can isolate
