I think there is, these days. bcmwl-kernel-source or broadcom-sta-dkms are AFAIK proprietary but supported by broadcom IIRC many Raspberry Pis use a broadcom chipset, and they mostly work But I agree, in the past it was a complete pain Along with Nvidia GPUs, but at least they made their drivers feely available -- Microsoft : the best reason to go to Linux that ever existed.
