Actually I appreciate when my system lets me log in early. That gives
me a chance to more easily fix things if things go wrong.

Since my root passwords are really ugly¹, I hate systemd's attitude of
asking for the root password if something in the boot process goes
wrong. I'd prefer the system to at least try² to get to a normal login
prompt so that I can log in as my user before looking for the root
password.

¹ and in many enterprise environments, noone knows the root password,
people log in with their user account and then escalate to root - a
pity when that doesn't work.
² I do know that this is not always possible
