The "KEEPING it wet" can be more of a problem. Fine if the unit is on your back porch, but what if it's an environmental station 90 miles back into the hills ? As said, there ARE some - kinda iffy - ways to detect water vapor that can fit into a kinda small/cheap package. It just depends on HOW accurate you need to be. If plus/minus 15% is functionally OK then ...... But I did do work for a commercial greenhouse long long back ... for max yield they needed more accurate figures.
