I have some AVR chips and a STK500 development board from before MicroChip 
bought Atmel.

I should see if I can get it going with the current Microchip Studio or 
whatever they call the current IDE. First step would be a USB/RS232 
dongle.

I'm not sure how this fits in. The only example I've seen uses the Uno 
pins to reprogram the boot loader. You would have to build your own board 
to replicate the original starter kit.

While the BASIC Stamp, PICAXE, and other devices existed the Arduino made 
life much easier. You could say it was something like installing MX or 
trying to get a functioning system with Linux From Scratch.
