Yeah. The 'flying doctors' were big in the outback back in the day

in the UK the air ambulance is pretty much free.
I met a guy in the cardiac ward who had had a heart attack on a trains 
station platform, was given first line by a paramedic who just happened 
to be there, was air ambulanced to one hospital where he died several 
times, air ambulanced to IIRC Cambridge where he had an operation, and 
woke up in the intensive care unit in my local hospital two weeks later...

They had given him a 5% chance of survival....probably the air ambulance 
saved his life

In the UK the very best medical care is not always available, but when 
it is, it is always free.

I wouldn't say it is the best system in the world, but at an estimated 
socialised cost of £1500 per year per citizen, it's a damn sight cheaper 
than US private health insurance.
