How To Acquire Vids From Usenet With GNU/Linux

Got a hankerin' for some vid?  Why cough up the extortionate fee
from the commercial channels?

For every fucking binary thing, somebody somewhere has posted it
to Usenet somewhere and at some time.

Step 1:

Point your browser to nzbking.com or https://binsearch.info.
Then enter sufficient search info.

When the desired title is located then download the NZB file.

Step 2:

Open the NZB file in Pan and download all the par2 and rar
files.  (Don't use Pan?  Then go and jump off a cliff.)

Note: your Usenet provider should have adequate retention as
some posts can be 10 years or more old.

Step 3:

Once the download is complete check the integrity of the
files using par2cmdline:

The command is simple:

par2repair file.par2

This will check and fix any errors.  It may be possible that
there were too many errors for the command to fix.  In that
case you are shit out of luck.  Try a different post.

Step 4:

Extract the final product using unrar:

Again, the command is simple:

unrar x file.rar(1)

Step 5:

Enjoy the final product.


You may want to build the above packages from source as any
distro-supplied programs will be crippled with both generic
build options and security "features" and consequently will
be much slower than hand-built code.
