To the point where if you tried to mount a volume created with one variant on another, you could be setting yourself up for filesystem corruption and data loss, and basically much wailing and gnashing of teeth. The procps version of ps <https://manpages.debian.org/ps(1)> (as commonly found in Linux distros) bends over backwards, knots itself into a pretzel, and then attempts some even more topologically-implausible feats, in its attempt to remain as compatible as possible with all the oddball legacy ps-es from before. But even it has to draw the line somewhere.
