He and others of the Red Scare era were shortsighted. They focused on the 
CPUSA which did march to the Comintern drummer. They missed the emigres 
from the Frankfurt school that had fled Germany. In the late '50s and '60s 
it was Marcuse, Horkheimer, Benjamin, Fromm and their ilk that were being 
read and discussed by the New Left, not the musty Stalinism. The New 
School for Social Research became the hub for the refugees.
