However, after some success, he apparently became a serious alcoholic and it kinda rotted his brain. He began to make accusations against people he shouldn't have and thus got pushed to the curb. Alas his later excesses led to considerable/excessive push-back/undoing later on. Also, USA - not so sure about UK/Euro - has pretty serious protections against persecuting people JUST because of their political beliefs. More than "belief" is required - some kind of active aggressive PLOT has to be proven. Even in the mid 1950s you WERE allowed to be a "Card-Carrying Communist". Still are.
