Tailgunner Joe WAS on to something. However, after
some success, he apparently became a serious alcoholic
and it kinda rotted his brain. He began to make
accusations against people he shouldn't have and thus
got pushed to the curb. Alas his later excesses led
   to considerable/excessive push-back/undoing later on.

Also, USA - not so sure about UK/Euro - has pretty
serious protections against persecuting people JUST
because of their political beliefs. More than "belief"
is required - some kind of active aggressive PLOT has
to be proven. Even in the mid 1950s you WERE allowed
to be a "Card-Carrying Communist". Still are.
