It was a little embarrassing that after his war on gays as well as
communists he wound up with the Bobbsey Twins, Cohn and Shine, on his
staff. Shine faded out of politics and despite the allegations fathered
several kids. Cohn remained active in political circles including
mentoring a young Trump, until he died of AIDS.

Strange era. I remember a John Birch Society meeting in, iirc, 1963, where
the party line was Dwight Eisenhower was a Communist dupe and Milton, his
brother, was his handler. Some of the animosity came from Eisenhower
appointing Earl Warren as chief justice. Their battle cry was 'Impeach
Earl Warren!'. Warren was as much a pig in a poke as Roberts.

I think I still have a copy of 'None Dare Call it Reason'. The JBS
circulated it widely. The JBS had its standards. Oliver was booted despite
being a founding member.

Many members thought 'Wall Street bankers' was a dog whistle but Welch was
careful to know which side the bread was buttered on. I was surprised to
find out they're still around.
