Whether you call them plug-ins, add-ons or extensions it is a bit daunting to come up with a proper definition for the darn thing. However I am not going to let this stop me from attempting to describe the beast. They are small software programs that should work seamlessly within the browser. Internet Explorer 7 calls them add-ons and you can find them by pulling down the tool menu and choosing manage add-ons. This will send you to the web page for the add-ons. Pulling down the tools menu in the Firefox browser will open up a dialog where you can see what add-ons you may have, delete the add-ons you already have or enter on a link where you can get more add-ons. Add-ons is supposed to enhance your browsing experience. They do not in any way add accessibility to either browser that I can see. I do not understand how add-ons can help Skype do what Skype does. I have downloaded an add-on for Firefox called alt click. It allows me to bring up a definition of any word I alt click on in my browsers window. This is sort of ho hum. Another add-on that I am more excited about allows me to go to google or yahoo images and when I click on the image, it will start a slide show of the images in full screen. Other add-ons can help in online shopping. Firefox has more add-ons than does Microsoft because Microsoft came to the plate later than Firefox in this particular area.
