can't get any audio out of my stereo speakers

Hi all,
I'm using a laptop computer, running windows xp home edition, and jaws for Windows version 9.
My laptop speakers work just fine.
However, when I plug my speakers into any jack on my computer, I cannot get any audio.
I want to use my stereo speakers.
Can someone walk me through, step by step on how to get my speakers to work?
It's not a volume issue either, because the volume is fine.
Do I go into sounds and audio devices?  If so, what do I do after that?
