opening web pages in the same window and not multiple windows in IE

Hi all,
I'm using windows xp home edition on a laptop running jfw 9.0.552U.
Here's the problem.  As you all know, in internet explorer, when you click on another web page from the page you're currently on, it sometimes opens in a new browser window.  Is there a way to make all web pages open in the same browser window instead of a new browser window?
If so, walk me through step by step on how to make this happen.
I went into internet options and I didn't see any check boxes to make all web pages open in the same browser window.
