anyone configured asus eee pc to talk?

hi listers

i just bought the asus eee pc 2g but have not fired it up yet.
been reading about it on the web and it seems like it could talk but my 
experience with linux is slight and i am not sure if i can master what it 
would take to get it going.

should i put it back and wait for the next one with xp preloaded?
