Workshop on Case Based Reasoning and Personalization
ECCBR 2002

With information becoming a commodity and access to data becoming
ubiquitous, computer users are increasingly faced with the problem of
locating information relevant and interesting to them rather than dat=
a in
general. Customizing data access, retrieval, processing and display
according to the users=92 preferences is the main task of current
personalization systems. These systems obtain user preferences throug=
h
interactions with users, summarize these preferences in a user model =
and use
this model to adapt and generate customized information or behavior. =
They
deliver the customized results in the manner that is most desirable f=
or the
current user, thereby increasing the quality of both the interaction =
and the
generated result.

Case Based Reasoning has been used in a variety of application areas =
to
retrieve relevant information. While typical personalization approach=
es on
the Internet focus on computing similarities between users of the sit=
es,
leaving the actual content out of scope, CBR typically focuses on the
content, rather than on providing information based on user character=
istics.
Initial applications of CBR concentrate primarily on the
application-specific customization of retrieval and adaptation, and n=
ot on
retrieving and delivering user dependent, customized information. Wit=
h the
advent of personalization, a new direction of CBR research and system=
s has
appeared. The developed personalized CBR systems adapt their knowledg=
e
containers according to the characteristics of individual users (or u=
ser
groups) in addition to the application area.

The use of CBR methods for personalization and the development of hyb=
rid
systems have introduced a need to integrate case-based methods with
alternative techniques such as collaborative filtering. This workshop
intends to bring together researchers from both the Personalization a=
nd CBR
communities to discuss and share their ideas and to demonstrate devel=
oped
systems.

Format:
One provocative, invited speaker from an adjacent community: 20 minut=
es
Discussion: 25 minutes

3 system presentations : 30 minutes, discussion 30 minutes
3 research presentations: 30 minutes, discussion 30 minutes

15 minutes frantically trying to summarize.

Participation:
The seven presentations at the workshop will be by invitation only. T=
he
selection of presenters will be based on their experience and the rel=
evance
of their work in the area of personalization and/or case-based reason=
ing as
well as the suggestions of interested participants. The system presen=
tations
will feature live demonstrations and analyses of the effects of
personalization on system behavior and user response.  Each presenter=
 will
prepare an accompanying invited paper to be published in the workshop
proceedings.

Colleagues interested in participating in the workshop should submit =
either
a two-page position paper (in Springer LNCS format
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html , as postscript or PDF)=
 or a
brief statement of interest in plain text, and may propose up to two
researchers/practitioners that they would like to have present at the
workshop. The position papers will ensure active participation of the
registered colleagues and also act as a survey of current activities =
in the
field. Accepted position papers will be made available on the worksho=
p web
site (http://www.cs.tcd.ie/cbrpws/ ). All workshop participants must
register for ECCBR 2002  (http://www.scms.rgu.ac.uk/eccbr2002/ ).

Participation to the workshop will be limited to 45 persons. The sele=
ction
of the participants will be based on the position papers and statemen=
ts of
interest.

Position papers, statements of interest, and names of potential speak=
ers
must be emailed to [email protected] by 28 Jun 2002.

The invited papers will be made available to registered participants =
on the
workshop website three weeks before the workshop. This ensures that t=
he
participants are informed and will facilitate interesting discussions=
 during
the workshop.
