The 2002 International Conference on Music and Artificial Intelligence
(ICMAI'02) will be held on 12-15 September 2002, at the historic
St.Cecilia's Hall, in the Old Town, Edinburgh, Scotland. We encourage
contributions that investigate the interplay between musical theory and
practice with techniques and methods from artificial intelligence,
including computational cognitive modelling of musical processes.
We are especially interested in issues of musical representations and
analysis, associated algorithms, and the evaluation of musical
artefacts.

The organising committee welcomes submissions on all aspects of music and
artificial intelligence. There will be the following, non-exclusive themes:

1. Representation, Analysis and Pattern Discovery.

2. Situated Musical Cognition, Embodied Musical Perception.

3. Creativity in Musical Composition and Performance.

The conference is organised jointly by the Faculty of Music and the
Division of Informatics, University of Edinburgh.

The conference will consist of paper sessions, posters, round table
discussions, concerts and various social events, including a Ceilidh.

SUBMISSIONS

Submissions of papers are now invited for:

      Category B: Informal progress report


Submissions under category B will be formally refereed, and those
submissions accepted will be published as electronic proceedings
in the Informatics Report Series, University of Edinburgh.

In addition, during the conference a printed version of the abstracts
will be available. Authors can choose whether to include the
original abstract of their paper, or an extended abstract, up to
1000 words maximum.

Authors of accepted papers of Category B are expected to present a
brief outline of their work at the conference and to prepare a poster
for display at the conference venue. Authors of selected papers may be
invited to give a longer presentation.

We encourage submission of papers in any area relevant to the
conference, including shorter papers, work in progress and system
descriptions. Submitted papers of Category B must describe work not
previously published, and must not be submitted concurrently to a
journal or to another conference. The reviewing process will be
strictly anonymous.


Papers should be no more than 12 pages maximum in length, including an
abstract of 70-150 words. Authors must follow the instructions and format
specifications of the Springer LNCS/LNAI Series, and use the appropriate
templates and style files provided (for more information, see the
conference web page). Authors are strongly encouraged to use LaTeX2e,
although Word files, in PDF or PS format, will also be accepted.
Papers not following the Springer specifications will not be accepted,
unless a special permission has been obtained before submission from the
organising committee.

Electronic submission has already started. The conference web page
should be consulted regularly for further details.
