Background and Motivation

Workshops provide a forum for focused discussions on research topics of cur=
rent interest. They offer an opportunity for researchers, practitioners, an=
d users with similar interests to exchange ideas, share new findings, and b=
rainstorm future directions.=20

We cordially invite proposals for half- or full-day workshops that address =
emerging new topics or new perspectives on current topics, pertinent to int=
elligent user interfaces. Researchers working on various areas within the I=
UI community are encouraged to submit proposals. The workshops will be held=
 on February 13, 2011, the first day of the conference.=20


Submission Requirements

The length of the proposals is limited to 3 pages formatted according to th=
e ACM style. The proposals should contain the following information to judg=
e the importance, quality, and relevance for IUI:=20
1. General information
   - Workshop title
   - Name, affiliation, and email of each organizer
   - Primary contact person
2. Motivation, objectives, and specific issues.=20
   - Motivation: What is the topic of the workshop? How is the topic relate=
d to IUI? Why is the topic of particular interest at this time? If the work=
shop has been organized in the past, please provide details and describe wh=
y it should be held again and how improvements will be made.
   - Objectives: What are the objectives that the workshop aims to achieve?=
 Objectives may include (a) targeting predefined questions, (b) presenting =
alternate view on the topic, (c) identifying new research directions, and/o=
r (d) establishing research collaborations.
   - Specific issues on which the workshop will focus.=20
3. Potential participants and workshop publicity:
   - Potential Participants: A brief discussion of why and to whom the work=
shop is of interest. State your estimate of the number of participants. If =
possible, give a list of tentatively confirmed participants.
   - Workshop Publicity: Indicate how you plan to publicize the workshops a=
nd attract submissions and participants. If you plan to edit a book or a jo=
urnal special issue as a result of your workshop, please indicate this.
4. Format:
   - Describe the workshop format, including the planned activities (invite=
 talk, plenary, poster, and discussion sessions, panels, demos) and how the=
 activities address the workshop objectives. Preference will be given to pr=
oposals that spark discussions and interaction among participants. Provide =
a preliminary schedule. For a half-day workshop, plan for 3 hours with a co=
ffee break. For a full-day workshop, plan for 6 hours with a lunch break an=
d two coffee breaks.
5. Organization:
   - Provide a one-paragraph bio for each organizer, describe their relevan=
ce to the workshop topics, and previous experience in organizing workshops =
or conferences.
   - Provide names and affiliations of the program committee members, if av=
ailable. The program committee should preferably include members from at le=
ast two institutions.

Workshop Topics

Topics of interest for IUI include all aspects of intelligent user interfac=
es. The topics include but are certainly not limited to the following:=20
1. Intelligent interaction with devices
   - Intelligent interactions with handheld devices such as mobile phones, =
music and video players, GPS, cameras, electronic books, etc.
   - Sensor- and actuator systems for user interfaces
   - Location- and context aware information systems
   - Tangible interaction with smart artifacts
   - Ubiquitous displays environments=20
   - Smart environments=20
2. Novel, intelligent interaction systems=20
   - Modeling and prediction of user behavior=20
   - Affective, social and aesthetic interfaces=20
   - Natural user interfaces including tangible computing and body computing
   - User-adaptivity in interactive systems=20
   - Personalization and recommender systems=20
   - Planning and plan recognition=20
3. IUI design=20
   - Knowledge-based approaches to user interface design and generation=20
   - Proactive and agent-based paradigms for user interaction=20
   - Example-based and demonstration-based interfaces=20
   - Smart use of sensing technologies for IUI Design
4. User studies=20
   - User studies concerning intelligent interfaces=20
   - Evaluation methods and evaluations of implemented intelligent user int=
erfaces=20
   - Smart technologies for remote usability testing and experience sampling
5. Processing of human-generated input=20
   - Recognition and interpretation of user input (face, body, speech, phys=
iology, text)
   - Analysis of psychological user states, such as attention and affect
   - Analysis of conversational cues, such as grounding and turn taking
   - Intelligent sensing platforms
   - Synchronization and fusion of Multimodal Input
6. Generation presentation of system output=20
   - Smart visualization tools=20
   - Intelligent authoring systems
   - Context-aware systems for the generation and presentation of situation=
-specific output
   - Synthesis of multimodal behavior for virtual characters and social rob=
ots
7. Help intelligent assistants for complex tasks=20
   - Support for collaboration in multiuser environments=20
   - Intelligent information and knowledge management=20
8. Novel trends, innovative solutions and applications=20
   - Novel sensing technologies for games and entertainment
   - Automotive user interfaces
   - Novel interaction methods for touch phones and multi touch surfaces


Review Criteria

The proposals will be reviewed and evaluated by the workshop chairs and the=
 IUI-2011 organizing committee. The following criteria will guide the revie=
w: relevance to IUI, interest for the audience, quality, and organization.

Organizer Responsibilities
The organizers of accepted workshops are expected to:
   - Define, produce, and distribute the call for papers (following deadlin=
es and details provided by the workshop chairs).
   - Solicit and review submissions, decide on the workshop program, and co=
ordinate the number of submissions and accepted papers with the workshop ch=
airs.
   - Assure workshop participants are informed about their registration to =
IUI and the workshop.
   - Set up and maintain the workshop website, which contains information a=
bout the workshop, the workshop materials (papers, presentations), and the =
outcomes summary.
   - Produce a single PDF with the workshop material to allow printing and =
distribution of the proceedings.=20
   - Attend and coordinate the workshop. At least one organizer of the work=
shop must register at early registration date.

   - Friday, August 20, 2010 		Acceptance/rejection notification email
   - Sunday, February 13, 2011 		IUI workshops date
