Call for Workshops
18th Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval
(SPIRE 2011)
Pisa, Italy
October 17--21, 2011
http://spire2011.isti.cnr.it/
SPIRE 2011 is the 18th edition of the International Symposium on String P=
rocessing and Information Retrieval. It will will take place at the Natio=
nal Council of Research campus (=93Area della Ricerca del CNR=94) in Pisa=
, Italy, and will be co-organized by the Institute for the Science and Te=
chnologies of Information of the Italian National Council of Research (IS=
TI-CNR), Pisa, and the Department of Computer Science of the University o=
f Pisa.
SPIRE 2011 will devote a full day to workshops, which will take place on =
Friday, October 21, 2011 (the day right after the main conference) at the=
Department of Computer Science of the University of Pisa. We invite prop=
osals for workshops intended to provide a forum for the discussion of a s=
pecific topic within the field of String Processing and Information Retri=
eval among an international group of researchers. Typical topics of inter=
est include, but are not limited to:
* String Processing: Dictionary algorithms, Text searching, Pattern m=
atching, Text and sequence compression, Succinct and compressed indexing,=
Automata-based string processing;
=20
* Biological Sequence Processing: Analysis of DNA and RNA sequencing =
data, Molecular sequence processing, Recognition of genes and regulatory =
elements, Comparative genomics and population genetics;
=20
* Information Retrieval: Information retrieval models, Indexing, Rank=
ing and filtering, Interface design for IR, Evaluation issues in IR, Text=
analysis, Text mining, Text classi=0Cfication and clustering, Informatio=
n extraction, Language models and topic models for search related-tasks, =
Efficient implementation of IR systems, Algorithms and data structures fo=
r IR;
=20
* Search-related tasks: Cross-lingual information retrieval, Multimed=
ia / multi-modal information retrieval, Recommendation and collaborative =
filtering, Semi-structured data retrieval, Blog retrieval.

Each workshop should have at least 6 paper presentations and preferably n=
o more than 10-12. Workshops are intended to be genuine interactive event=
s and not mini-conferences. We welcome workshops with a creative structur=
e and organization, that may thus attract various types of contributions =
and ensure rich interaction.
Workshop organizers will be responsible for forming a program committee, =
publicizing the workshop, preparing a call for papers, having submissions=
reviewed, and selecting the papers to be presented at the workshop. ALL =
the organizers of an accepted workshop must commit to be present at the w=
orkshop. Workshops will also be advertised through the SPIRE 2011 website=
and mailing list. A workshop proposal should include the following infor=
mation:
* Title of the workshop;
* Name, affiliation, and e-mail address of the proposer(s);
* A brief CV of the proposer(s), explaining their qualifications;
* Names of at least three PC members for the workshops;
* A description of the topic of the workshop (not exceeding 100 words=
) plus a short description on how the workshop will be advertised so as t=
o ensure a sufficiently wide range of submissions and participants;
* The expected number of participants;
* A description of how the workshop will contribute to the field of S=
tring Processing and/or Information Retrieval.
All proposals will be reviewed by the SPIRE 2011 Workshops Committee. Ple=
ase submit your workshop proposal to the SPIRE 2011 Workshops Chair Nadia=
Pisanti (University of Pisa).
Important dates:
* Submission of workshop proposals: March 8, 2011
* Notifications of workshop acceptance / rejection: April 1, 2011
* SPIRE 2011 Workshops: October 21, 2011
