GENERAL INFORMATION
From Thursday 16 to Saturday 18 December 2004 (three days) the
International Conference "MODEL-BASED REASONING IN SCIENCE AND
ENGINEERING: ABDUCTION, VISUALIZATION, AND SIMULATION" will be held at
the University of Pavia (near Milan, Italy).
The conference continues the theme of the Conferences "Model-Based
Reasoning in Scientific Discovery" MBR'98 and "Model-Based Reasoning:
Scientific Discovery, Technological Innovation, and Values" MBR'01

PROGRAM
The conference will deal with the logical, epistemological, and
cognitive aspects of modeling practices employed in science and
engineering, including computational models of such practices. We
solicit papers that examine the role of abduction, visualization, and
simulation in model-based reasoning from philosophical, historical,
sociological, psychological, or computational perspectives.
RELEVANT RESEARCH AREAS
We call for papers that cover topics pertaining to model-based
reasoning in science and engineering from the following list:
- abduction
- visual, spatial, imagistic modeling and reasoning
- simulative modeling
- the role of diagrammatic representations
- computational models of visual and simulative reasoning
- causal and counterfactual reasoning in model construction

- thought experimenting
- logical analyses related to model-based reasoning

SUBMISSIONS OF PAPERS
All submitted papers will be carefully refereed. The precise format of
the conference will be fixed after we have an idea of the number of
accepted papers. We expect approximately 40 contributed presentations
some of 40 and others of 20 minutes. There will be several invited
papers of 1 hour. A selected subset will be invited for inclusion
(subject to additional refereeing) in a book which will constitute an
advanced handbook for researchers in this area. The book will be
published by an international publishing house. Moreover another
selected subset will be invited for inclusion (subject to additional
refereeing) in special issues of suitable international journals.
Authors must submit an electronic version - formatted in Microsoft
Word or RTF,PS or PDF ( in this last case two cases please include
source - DOC, TEX, etc., file) - of an extended abstract (total
word count aproximately 1000-1200).The file must also contain a 300
WORD abstract that will be used for the conference web

The purpose of ISICT 04 is to provide an international forum for
discussion between theoreticians and practitioners and to promote an
inter disciplinary exchange of research ideas. We invite papers
exploring all aspects of Computer and Communication
Technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

There are two principal modes of paper submission:
MODE I : Invited Workshop Organization
To chair and organize a workshop at ISICT 04 send an email to
[email protected] with the title, a description of the topic of your
proposed workshop up to two hundred words in length, and the name(s)
of the workshop organizer(s) and chair(s) as soon as possible and
before 15 January 2004. If your proposal is suitable, you will receive
preliminary approval notification within a few days. Final approval
will depend upon submission and registration of at least FOUR papers
in the workshop by the ISICT 04 camera ready deadline of 17th March
2004. The organizer(s) of pre-approved workshops will be responsible
for advertising their workshop, using electronic or other means, and
for the reviewing process for their workshop's papers or extended
abstracts, and for the notification to ISICT 04 of accepted
papers. The organizer(s) of approved workshops will be added to the
ISICT 04 programme committee and be editors of the ISICT 04 conference
proceedings.
MODE II : Stand-Alone Papers
Papers must be submitted in WORD or PDF format by 1st February 2004
for review. Please submit either an extended abstract or short paper
of up to 6 pages in length. Papers should be formatted so that they
are single-spaced, single column, and use a 12pt Times font. All
papers submitted will be reviewed in full by reviewers from
independent institutions.

In recent years it became well-accepted, that it is crucial for
intelligent agents to have the ability to learn from and adapt to
their environment. This task is even more complex when the agent is
situated in an environment that contains other agents with potentially
different capabilities and goals.
The goal of this symposium is to increase awareness and interest in
adaptive and learning agent research, encourage collaboration between
machine learning experts and agent system experts, and give a
representative overview of current research in the area of adaptive
agents. The symposium will serve as an inclusive forum for the
discussion on ongoing or completed work in both theoretical and
practical issues.
The proposed symposium is the fourth in a series of symposia that have
taken place annually since 2001 (see http://www.aamas.net). All
accepted papers are published in Symposia proceedings. The best papers
from the first two AAMAS Symposia have been published in a Springer
LNAI book (LNAI 2636), and we plan to publish a follow-up volume
including papers from the third and fourth AAMAS Symposia.

Call For Workshop Proposals
The ICML-2004 Organizing Committee invites proposals for workshops to
be held at the 21st International Conference on Machine Learning
(ICML-2004), which will take place July 4-8, 2004, in Banff, Alberta,
Canada. ICML-2004 will be co-located <http://www.banff04.org/> with
the Computational Learning Theory (COLT-04) and Uncertainty in AI
(UAI-04) conferences (see <http://www.banff04.org>). The workshops
will be held on July 8th, the same day as the UAI tutorials. There
will be room for two large (< 150 participants) and up to two small
workshops (< 40 participants).
Workshops provide organizers and participants with an opportunity to
focus intensively on a specific topic in machine learning. Workshops
can choose to concentrate on emerging research topics, but can also be
devoted to application issues, or to questions concerning the economic
and social aspects of Machine learning and data mining. Proposals that
aim at a cross-fertilization between Machine Learning and one of the
topics of the co-located conferences are particularly welcome.
Working notes of the workshops will be made available to participants
in electronic form prior to the conference.
How to Propose a Workshop
Workshop proposals should contain the necessary information for the
workshop chair and reviewers from the conference organizing committee
to judge the importance, quality and community interest in the
proposed topic. Each workshop should have one or more designated
organizers and a workshop program committee. When proposing a
workshop, please provide (at least) the following information:
* /Topic --/ What will the workshop be about? Why do you believe
this is an interesting and significant topic? Why is the topic
best addressed in an ICML workshop, as opposed to a workshop at
another conference or papers in an ICML technical session?
* /Goals --/ What do you expect will come out of the workshop? How
will the workshop change the participants' understanding of the
area? Do you think it will have an impact on the Machine Learning
community at large?
* /Intended audience --/ From which areas do you expect potential
participants to come? How many participants do you expect? Can you
already name some of them?
* /Format --/ How will the workshop sessions be scheduled? How much
time will be used for discussion, panel discussions, paper
presentations, invited talks, or other methods for encouraging
communication and consensus? Organizers are encouraged to focus on
mechanisms other than traditional paper presentations and to
differentiate themselves clearly from typical conference sessions.
* /Publicity --/ How do you intend to publicize the workshop? How
will you reach the most interested and appropriate participants?
Are there any plans to document the workshop results (beyond
ICML's web publication)?

THEME
Ubiquitous business, ambient intelligence, global digital libraries,
lifelong learning, virtual communities, are just a few of the visions
for the future which will bring unimaginable changes and new
challenges for all of us. Human Language Technology (HLT) is one of
the key technologies to make these visions come true. The main
objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from both
natural language processing and information systems with the aim of

The Twenty-first International Conference on Machine Learning
(ICML-2004) will be held in Banff Alberta Canada, 4-8 July 2004. The
conference will bring together researchers to exchange ideas and
report recent progress in the field of machine learning. ICML-2004
will be co-located with COLT-2004 (July 1-4) and UAI-2004 (July 8-11)
at the Banff Park Lodge (http://www.banffparklodge.com). The

Topics for Submission
ICML-2004 invites submissions on substantial, original, and previously
unpublished research on all aspects of machine learning research,
including applications, techniques, theories, and connections to
related fields of inquiry.
Format of the Conference
The conference will include three and a half days of technical
presentations along with one day of tutorials and one day of
workshops. The conference will also feature poster sessions and
informal gatherings designed to foster discussion of research in
machine learning. Accepted papers will each be given an oral
presentation and also featured in an evening poster session, to allow
conference attendees to discuss the work with the authors at greater
length. The ICML program will also feature talks by several invited
speakers.
On July 4, the first day of ICML, there will be a joint Kernel Day
featuring regular papers from both ICML and COLT on kernel-based
learning methods. Kernel Day replaces the previous Kernel Workshop
held in conjunction with NIPS and COLT, and will also include a
special kernels poster session. For more information on the special

Paper Submission
To submit a paper to ICML-2004, authors must first submit an
electronic abstract by *Friday, 30 January 2004, 23:59:59 Mountain
Standard Time*.
The deadline for paper submission to ICML-2004 is *Tuesday, 3 February
2004, 23:59:59 Mountain Standard Time*. The submission process will be
entirely electronic.
Authors should submit papers using the same format and length as will
be required for the final proceedings version. Detailed instructions,
as well as templates for LaTeX and Word, will be available at

*Policy on Multiple Submissions* ICML-2004 will not accept any paper
which, at the time of submission, is under review or has already been
accepted for publication in a journal or another conference. Authors
are also expected not to submit their papers elsewhere during ICML's
review period.

Review Process
Papers submitted to ICML-2004 will normally be reviewed by three (but
at least two) referees. We will continue the policy of conditionally
accepting papers that are not publishable in their initial form, but
that the reviewers feel can be improved enough in time to appear in
the proceedings. If a paper is conditionally accepted, the
requirements for acceptance will be explicitly listed on the review
form. Papers that have been conditionally accepted will be reviewed
again after re-submission.
Note that reviewing for ICML-2004 will be *blind* to the identities of
the authors.

Conference Details:
Since 1985, the Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence
(UAI) has been the primary international forum for presenting new
results on the use of principled methods for reasoning under
uncertainty within intelligent systems. The scope of UAI is wide,
including, but not limited to, representation, automated reasoning,
learning, decision making and knowledge acquisition under
uncertainty. We encourage submissions that report on advances in these
core areas as well as submissions describing interesting and novel
systems that utilize techniques from these core areas.
The UAI 2004 conference will be held in Banff, Canada. The main
technical session will be on July 9-11, and will be preceded with an
advanced tutorial program on July 8th. The conference is collocated
with and follows both the Computational Learning Theory (COLT)
conference, which will be held July 1 through July 4, and the
International Conference on Machine learning (ICML), which will be
held July 4 through July 8. UAI 2004 coincides with the Calgary
Stampede Days, so we advise attendees to book flights, hotels, and car
rentals as early as possible.
Paper Submission:
We encourage submissions that report on theoretical or methodological
advances in representation, automated reasoning, learning, decision
making and knowledge acquisition under uncertainty. We also encourage
submissions that report on systems that utilize techniques from these
core areas. Submitted papers will be carefully evaluated on the basis
of originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of
exposition. Papers submitted for review should represent original,
previously unpublished work. At the time the full paper is submitted
to UAI-2004, and for the entire review period, the paper should not be
under review by any other conference or scientific journal.
UAI-2004 requires electronic submission of papers and abstracts
according to instructions posted at the conference home page. If
authors have special circumstances that prevent electronic submission,
arrangements can be made directly with the program co-chairs listed
below. Authors are required to submit a title and a short abstract a
week before the paper submission deadline. Submitted papers must be
prepared according to the UAI-2004 proceedings format and must be no
more than eight (8) pages long, including figures and bibliography.
Papers that deviate from these guidelines will be rejected without
review. The conference home page will contain format information and
provides access to style files and templates.
Papers may be accepted for presentation in plenary or poster sessions.
All accepted papers will be included in the Proceedings of the
Twentieth Conference on Uncertainty in Artificial Intelligence. The
program committee will select papers for special distinction in two
categories at UAI-2004: a "Best Paper" award, and an "Outstanding
Student Paper" award. The conference home page will contain
instructions for certifying student status with regards to the latter
award.

The 15th European Conference on Machine Learning (ECML) and the 8th
European Conference on Principles and Practice of Knowledge Discovery
in Databases (PKDD) will be co-located in Pisa, Italy, September
20-24, 2004. The combined event will comprise presentations of
contributed papers and invited speakers, a wide program of workshops
and tutorials, a demo session, and a discovery challenge.

Paper submission
High quality research contributions pertinent to any aspects of
machine learning and knowledge discovery are called for, ranging from
principles to practice; particular attention will be paid to papers
describing innovative, challenging applications.
There will be a single electronic submission procedure, where authors
should indicate whether they submit their paper to ECML, PKDD, or
both. In the latter case, the topic of the joint submission must be
within the scope of both conferences; accepted joint submissions will
be assigned to the most appropriate of the conferences. Student
submissions should be clearly indicated on the submission form. All
submissions will be reviewed by the respective program committees.
The papers must be in English and should be formatted according to the
Springer-Verlag Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence
guidelines. Authors instructions and style files can be downloaded at
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html. The maximum length of
papers is 12 pages. The proceedings of ECML and PKDD will be published
as two separate volumes by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in
Artificial Intelligence series and will be available at the
conference.
Simultaneous submissions to other conferences are allowed, provided
this fact is clearly indicated on the submission form. Simultaneous
submissions that are not clearly specified as such will be rejected.
Accepted papers will appear in the ECML/PKDD conference proceedings
only if they are withdrawn from proceedings of other conferences.
Best Paper Awards
KDNet and Kluwer will honour the best papers and the best student
papers with awards. The awards will be based on the significance and
originality of the contributions.
ECML Call for Papers
The European Conference on Machine Learning series intends to provide
an international forum for the discussion of the latest high quality
research results in machine learning and is the major European
scientific event in the field. Submissions of papers that describe the
application of machine learning methods to real-world problems are
encouraged, particularly exploratory research that describes novel
learning tasks and applications requiring non-standard techniques.
Submissions that demonstrate both theoretical and empirical rigor are
especially encouraged.

Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) is the ability

1. General Invitation for Submissions
The Student Research Workshop is an established tradition at ACL
conferences. The workshop provides a venue for student researchers
investigating topics in Computational Linguistics and Natural Language
Processing to present their work and receive feedback. Participants
will have the opportunity to receive feedback both from the general
audience and from selected panelists -- experienced researchers who
prepare in-depth comments and questions in advance of the
presentation. One paper will be selected for the ACL-04 Student
Research Workshop Best Paper Award.
We invite all student researchers to submit their work to the
workshop. As the main goal of the workshop is to provide feedback, the
emphasis is on work in progress. Original and unpublished research is
therefore invited on all aspects of computational linguistics
including, but not limited to, these topic areas:
*pragmatics, discourse, semantics, syntax and the lexicon
*phonetics, phonology and morphology
*linguistic, mathematical and psychological models of language

2. Submission Requirements
Papers should describe original work, still in progress. Submission
will therefore normally be open only to students who have settled on
their thesis direction but who still have significant research left to
do; those students in the final stages of their thesis should consider
submitting instead to the main conference. Papers should clearly
indicate directions for future research wherever appropriate. The
papers may have more than one author; however, all authors MUST be
students. Please note: a paper accepted for presentation at the
Student Workshop cannot be presented or have been presented at any
other meeting with publicly available published proceedings. Papers
that are being submitted to other conferences must indicate this under
identification information (see submission guidelines below). Students
who have already presented at an ACL/EACL/NAACL student session may
not present at a student session again, but are encouraged to submit
to the main conference instead.
3. Submission Procedure
Submissions should follow the two-column format of ACL proceedings and
should not exceed six (6) pages, including references. We strongly
recommend the use of ACL LaTeX style files or Microsoft Word Style
files tailored for this year's conference. These will soon be
available from the web pages of ACL-04 and the student research
workshop. A description of the format will also be available in case
you are unable to use these style files directly.
Submission must be electronic. The following formats are acceptable:
PostScript (.ps), Rich Text Format ACL style (.rtf), Microsoft Word
ACL style (.doc) and PDF (.pdf). The electronic submissions should be
sent in an attachment to the following e-mail address:

4. Reviewing Procedure
Reviewing of papers submitted to the Student Workshop will be managed
by the Student Workshop Co-Chairs, with the assistance of a team of
reviewers. Each submission will be matched with a mixed panel of
student and senior researchers for review. The final acceptance
decision will be based on the results of the review.
Note that reviewing of papers will be blind; therefore, please make
sure your paper shows the title, but no author information. You
should likewise not have any self-identifying references anywhere in
the paper submitted for review. For example, rather than this "We
showed previously (Smith, 2001), ..." use citations such as "Smith
(2001) previously showed ..."
5. Schedule
Submissions must be received by March 8th, 2004. Late submissions will
be automatically disqualified. Acknowledgment will be e-mailed soon
after receipt. Notification of acceptance will be sent to authors (by
e-mail) on April 26th, 2004. Detailed formatting guidelines for the
preparation of the final camera-ready copy will be provided to authors
with their acceptance notice.

The Seventeenth Annual COLT (Conference on Learning Theory, formerly
Workshop on Computational Learning Theory) will be held with ICML and
UAI in Banff, Canada (see http://www.banff04.org).
We invite submissions of papers addressing the theoretical modeling
and analysis of all aspects of learning and empirical inference. We
strongly support a broad definition of learning theory, including
analysis of learning algorithms and their generalization ability,
computational complexity of learning, Bayesian analysis, statistical
mechanics of learning systems, optimisation procedures for learning,
inductive inference, Boolean function learning, inductive logic
programming, learning in planning and control, on-line learning and
relative loss bounds. We welcome theoretical papers about learning
that do not fit into the above categories. We are particularly
interested in papers that include viewpoints that are new to the COLT
community. While the primary focus of the conference is theoretical,
papers can be strengthened by the inclusion of relevant experimental
results. We also welcome experimental and algorithmic papers provided
they are relevant to the focus of the conference by elucidating
theoretical results in learning.
The last morning of the conference will be reserved for a kernel
methods session, linking with a similar session that will start the
ICML conference on the afternoon of the same day. Papers making
contributions in the area of kernel methods are welcomed: the choice
of conference should be made according to the suitability of the
paper. Authors should indicate if their paper is intended for the
kernel methods session.
All papers will appear in the proceedings, to be published in the
Springer Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence series (see
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/index.html). The proceedings will
appear both as a printed book and in a full-text electronic version,
thus we require electronic submissions. All papers will receive the
same amount of space in the proceedings. Papers that have previously
appeared in journals or at other conferences, or that are being
submitted to other conferences are not appropriate for COLT.
PAPER FORMAT: Submissions should include the title, authors' names,
postal and email addresses, indication if the paper is intended for
the kernel methods section and a 200-word summary of the paper
suitable for the conference program. They should be no longer than 15
pages using the Springer LNCS style file (see
http://www.springer.de/comp/lncs/authors.html). Your paper should
include a clear definition of the theoretical model used and a clear
description of the results, as well as a discussion of their
significance, including comparison to other work. Submit papers
electronically in pdf or ps format (for details see conference

OPEN PROBLEMS SESSION: We also invite submission of open
problems. These should be constrained to two pages using the same
formatting as for the full papers. There is a shorter reviewing period
for the open problems. Accepted contributions will be allocated short
presentation slots in a special open problems session and will be
allowed two pages each in the proceedings.

STAIRS'2004 is the second European Starting AI Researcher Symposium,
an international meeting aimed at AI researchers, from all countries,
at the beginning of their career: PhD students or people holding a PhD
for less than one year. STAIRS'04 will be held jointly with ECAI'04 in
Valencia, Spain, on August 23rd and 24th. The Symposium will be hosted
by the "Departamento de Sistemas Informáticos y Computación (DSIC) of
the Universidad Politécnica de Valencia".
STAIRS'04 offers doctoral students and young post-doctoral AI students:

Submission is a two-stage process. Authors are asked to submit to the
STAIRS'04 co-chairs (see below) a brief summary of their paper by
Thursday, April 1, 2004, followed by their full paper by Wednesday,
April 7, 2004 (23:59 CET).
The strongly preferred submission method for summaries and full papers
is to use the web-based submission form. Submitted summaries will be
assigned a unique tracking number that should be marked on the full
paper submission. Authors without access to the web should send a
summary including the title, authors, contact address and abstract of
the paper (maximum 200 words), plus keywords to the STAIRS'04 PC
co-chairs. Only PDF files will be accepted. Electronic or hardcopy
submissions may also be made if web-based submission is problematic
for the authors.

STAIRS 2004 Formatting Guidelines page:

The deadline for receipt is 7 April 2004 for both electronic and
hardcopy submissions. Paper received after that date will not be
reviewed. Notification of receipt of full papers will be mailed to the
corresponding author soon after receipt.
Review process
Papers should address significant research works undertaken by the
authors. At least one of the authors must be a PhD student, or a
person holding a PhD for less than a year. Preference will be given to
papers whose authors are all in such condition.
All submissions will be subject to academic peer review by the
STAIRS'04 Program Committee. The papers will undergo an anonymous
reviewing process. Each paper will be assigned at least two
reviewers. Review criteria include originality of ideas, technical
soundness, significance of results, and quality of presentation.
Multiple submission policy: Multiple submissions with ECAI is allowed
if this is clearly indicated on a front page preceding the paper
itself. In borderline cases single submissions will be preferred over
multiple submissions. In case of multiple acceptance the author(s) are
strictly required to withdraw their paper from all but one event.
Notification of acceptance or rejection of submitted papers will be
emailed to the corresponding author by May 21, 2004.
Conference Proceedings
The conference proceedings will be published and distributed by IOS
Press. The authors will be responsible for producing camera-ready copies
of papers, conforming to the STAIRS'04 formatting guidelines, for
inclusion in the proceedings. The deadline for receipt of the
camera-ready copy is June 4, 2004.
For each accepted paper, at least one author, and most preferably one of
the beginner researchers involved in the work, is required to attend the
conference to present the paper.

SCOPE
ICGI-2004 is the seventh in a series of successful biennial
international conferences in the area of grammatical inference. The
emphasis of this year's conference is on innovative applications of
grammatical inference.
Grammatical inference has been extensively addressed by researchers in
information theory, automata theory, language acquisition,
computational linguistics, machine learning, pattern recognition,
computational learning theory and neural networks.
AREAS OF INTEREST
The conference seeks to provide a forum for presentation and
discussion of original research papers on all aspects of grammatical
inference including, but not limited to:
- Different models of grammar induction: e.g., learning from examples,
learning using examples and queries, incremental versus
non-incremental learning, distribution-free models of learning,
learning under various distributional assumptions, learnability
results, complexity results, characterizations of representational and
search biases of grammar induction algorithms.
- Algorithms for induction of different classes of languages and
automata: e.g., regular, context-free, and context-sensitive
languages, interesting subclasses of the above under additional
syntactic constraints, tree and graph grammars, picture grammars,
multidimensional grammars, attributed grammars, parameterized models,
etc.
- Theoretical and experimental analysis of different approaches to
grammar induction including artificial neural networks, statistical
methods, symbolic methods, information-theoretic approaches, minimum
description length, complexity-theoretic approaches, heuristic
methods, etc.
- Broader perspectives on grammar induction, e.g. acquisition of
grammar in conjunction with language semantics, semantic constraints
on grammars, language acquisition by situated agents and robots,
acquisition of language constructs that describe objects and events in
space and time, developmental and evolutionary constraints on language
acquisition, statistical modelling of natural language, etc.
Particular emphasis will be given to papers presenting work on
innovative applications of grammar induction in natural language
acquisition, computational biology, Web mining, structural pattern
recognition, information retrieval, text processing, adaptive
intelligent agents, systems modelling and control, and other domains.
LOCATION AND ORGANISATION
ICGI-2004 will be held in Athens. Athens (http://www.cityofathens.gr/)
the capital of Greece, is a city of long and rich history. Being the
birthplace of democracy and modern Olympic Games
(http://www.athens2004.gr/), it has a lot to offer in terms of
history, culture and social life. Greece's geographical location makes
Athens via its International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos
(http://www.aia.gr/) easily accessible for visitors from all corners
of the world. Athens International Airport is located about 35 minutes
away from Athens, accessible by cab or public transportation.
The conference will be located in the National Centre for Scientific
Research (NCSR) Demokritos (http://www.demokritos.gr/), Athens,
Greece. NCSR "Demokritos" is the largest self-governing research
organisation, under the supervision of the Ministry of Development of
the Greek Government. It is a multidisciplinary centre, comprising 8
Institutes that cover a wide area of science, ranging from informatics
microelectronics to biology and nuclear technology. The Institute of
Informatics and Telecommunications (http://www.iit.demokritos.gr/) has
the main responsibility for the organisation of the conference.
ICGI-2004 is organised under the auspices of ICGI, the International
Committee on Grammatical Inference
(http://eurise.univ-st-etienne.fr/gi/), and EETN, the Hellenic
Association for Artificial Intelligence (http://ww.eetn.gr/).
CONFERENCE FORMAT
The conference will include plenary and invited talks, software
demonstrations and possibly poster presentations of accepted papers
and tutorials. A special session will be devoted to the results of a
competition on Learning Context Free Grammars from Positive
examples. All plenary and invited papers will appear in the conference
proceedings. The proceedings of ICGI-2004 will be published by
Springer-Verlag as a volume in their Lecture Notes in Artificial
Intelligence, a subseries of the Lecture Notes in Computer Science
series.
SUBMISSION OF PAPERS
Prospective authors are invited to submit a draft paper in English
with the following format. The cover page should specify: submission
to ICGI-2004, title, authors and affiliation, mailing address, phone,
fax, and e-mail address of the contact author, a brief abstract
describing the work, at least three keywords which can specify
typically the contents of the work. Postscript versions of the papers
should be formatted according to A4 or 8.5"x11", and the length should
not exceed 12 pages excluding the cover page. The technical
expositions should be directed to a specialist and should include an
introduction understandable to a non specialist that describes the
problem studied and the results achieved, focusing on the important
ideas and their significance.

Oregon State University is initiating a new PhD program in Ecosystem
Informatics that combines research in computer science, mathematics,
and ecosystem sciences. Graduate students in this program work in
cross-disciplinary teams to solve fundamental and applied research
programs in ecosystem science areas. The program begins with a 2-week
orientation at OSU's Andrews Experimental Forest in late summer. This
includes one week of field work and one week of data analysis and
modeling, as well as an opportunity to get to know the faculty and
students in the program. All students in the program participate in a
one-year core course that introduces the scientific and technological
challenges of ecosystem science and advanced computer science methods.
Students are expected to do a 3-6 month internship with a national or
international organization. Several organizations around the world
have agreed to host interns from our program (all internship expenses
are paid).
We are seeking students interested in the following computer science
areas:
(1) software engineering for supporting ecological modeling including
model construction, experimentation, and validation,
(2) mathematical methods for modeling complex ecosystems,
(3) spatio-temporal database systems,
(4) management of diverse ecological databases including data
discovery via the semantic web,
(5) machine learning, data mining, and pattern recognition with
applications to ecological modeling, change detection, and novel
instrumentation for ecological science.
Generous fellowships for qualified Ph.D. students are funded by the
NSF IGERT (Interdisciplinary Graduate Education and Research Training)
program. To qualify, students must be (1) US citizens or permanent
residents, (2) accepted into a Ph.D. program in one of the six
departments at OSU that are participating in the IGERT, and (3) have
proposed a research and study plan consistent with the goals of this
IGERT. The six departments are BioEngineering, Computer Science,
