Now _that's_ an interface that invites me to try it!
I had just one misunderstanding, which looking at the
program code would have prevented, and that was one
obvious click away.

The "strips.pl" example does not appear to work.  That is,
I have no reason to doubt the code, the _interface_ is
what doesn't work for me.  There is
an example query in the source code that does not show up
in the "Select example query" picker.
