I always assumed this was a contraction of 'swipl window' - i.e. the console window.

On my windows 7 system with 6.1.9 typing 'swipl' in a DOS box brings up a unix style command line interactor.
Typing swipl-win brings up the normal window.

So, no relation to Windows OS.
