It just hit me why so many of the applications I'm seeing seem to be 'unusual'.

It's simple - other systems pretty much have decided ahead of time what you're going to do, and leave you struggling
if you're doing something out of the box. So people with out of the box problems (like getting packages
to the right place) end up in Prolog.
