Thank you so much. I am using the gtrace command instead and the weird characters aren't being displayed.

It's funny though because I seemed to be the only one in my lab class to be facing this.

Thanks.  It reproduces on my version.  Simple work-around: use the 
graphical tracer.  Considering nobody complained, that seems to be
done more often :-):

   ?- trace, my_program.
