The APR Logo ### Work In Progress ###
============

The two SVG files in this directory were created with Inkscape[1]. Both
contain several layers that implement variants of (part of) the logo.

NOTE: This logo was first published in October 2025. Older versions of
the logo are archived in sub-directories.
FIXME: "will be" first published...I hope.

apr-oakleaf-inkscape.svg
------------------------

Source: https://www.apache.org/foundation/press/kit/feather.svg

This image is derived from the ASF oak-leaf logo, with an added white
outline (in two variants). The leaf is slightly smaller, with in the
same 650x1000 bounding box.

It should not be used as a stand-alone logo, only embedded into the
larger APR logo (see below). Use feather.svg in stand-alone contexts.

Layers:
 - leaf: the original, unmodified oak leaf.
 - outline-v1: a thin white outline and background conforming to the
 exact contours of the leaf.
 - outline-v2: a slightly modified outline that blends into the gap
in the leaf on the right side of the stem.
 - background: tinted background rectangle the size of the bounding box
against which the outlines are clearly visible.

apr-logo-inkscape.svg
---------------------

NOTE: This image has embedded text. You must install the required fonts
in order to view or edit it.

Layers:
 - constr-dim: construction dimension annotations.
 - constr-line: logo construction lines.
 - leaf,
 outline-v1,
outline-v2: same as in apr-oakleaf-inkscape.svg, above.
 - text: the logo text: "APACHE" in three different colours
and "PORTABLE RUNTIME PROJECT" in white.
 - bar: the navy blue rectangle used as the background for
 the white text.

Fonts:
 - constr-dim: Times New Roman Regular and Arial Regular;
should be available more or less everywhere.
 - text: Open Sans Regular and Bold; these fonts are free and
can be downloaded and installed from, e.g., Google Fonts.

FIXME: Open Sans will be replaced by Garet, the font used
by the ASF logo. However, Garet is not a free, open
 source font.

NOTE: Without modifications, this logo only works on a white background.
To use it in other contexts, change the fill and stroke of the
leaf outline to the desired colour. This can be done with CSS,
as the outline path(s) have a unique IDs. However, do NOT use the
logo on a dark background, that just won't work.

Exporting the Logo Variants
---------------------------

Step 1: Remove the layers constr-dim, constr-line and one of the outlines.
Remove one of the three "APACHE" texts, depending on which colour
you require. When exporting the logo for the web site, also remove
the bar layer; the site adds it with CSS styling.

Step 2: Convert all text to paths/curves to remove dependency on fonts.

Step 3: Export the image as a plain or optimised SVG. Be careful with
optimisations: the curve points must be exported with high precision
or there may be special effects, and element identifiers should be
retained, at least for the outline, if you plan on modifying the
colours through CSS. (Note that it's easy enough to add unique
to later with a text editor, if you're patient enough.)
