[Word to the wise]
   make sure you link libpthread.so and NOT libc_r.so.
   Also, FreeBSD 5.[34]+ is required for threads.

$ cat /etc/libmap.conf
libc_r.so.6             libpthread.so.2
libc_r.so               libpthread.so
