I'm at the Google Summer of Code mentor summit. I am very surprised at
the number of people from other projects who are based at
universities, I'd say about 40%. So clearly there are plenty of people
in other projects who are from the academic sector (admittedly this is
probably skewed by the nature of GSoC).

At the time of writing I'm sitting in a session on women in open
source. The interesting thing is that not only do we have less
academics than I would like but we have less women than others too.
