A few notes, mostly for my own ToDo List:
   - strange things with r1923281 and German doc. (We never sorted out 
this UTF-8 vs entity things with doc building. It still puzzles me!)
   - if another rc is needed, I'll try to take time to add a few entries 
in CHANGES for things already backported, at least to give credits to 
some contributors.
