Fair enough, this is non-trivial indeed. That aside is now tracked in ticket
#70095.

Thanks again for your changes and explanations, but I just spent an hour
looking at them and the result with a rare degree of confusion, and remain
quite unsure about what this all means.

There are a number of concepts I do not master here, but may I ask if you a=
re
quite confident about the solution? Should I understand that the majority of
request env-variables (such as IS_SUBREQ) are specified not in env.html, but
rather in expr.html?
