With static image servers there is rarely a need to "load balance".  A single 
Apache server can server upward of 100Mbs if tuned well.  There is definitely 
an issue of high-availability.  As you said yourself, "I'm looking for 
redundancy".

We have used it for the exact same purpose with great success.
