Likewise.  However, I've shown the problem to our resident wizard ("I'm 
not a wizard!  If I were a wizard, there'd be a lot more frogs around 
here!") and he's poking about in the apache and php config files. 
Checking for filters, etc.

A closer inspection of my setup shows that the php is being interpreted 
for the header only.  php in the body is being skipped as is php in the 
footer.  View Source (vim) shows it as greyed out comments.
