htdig interference???

Howdy,
We're running htdig-3.1.6, php-4.2.2, apache_1.3.26, and mod_layout-3.2
on RedHat 7.3.
I have 2 of 4 virtual websites being indexed by htdig for a search
capability.
The indexing seems to work (I've been able to successfully search for
new text changes), but I get an error message every morning about
"Unable to build connection with www.xxx.com:80". From all I can find
on the htdig lists, everything should be working fine, but they mention
something about "running into HTTP" in the middle of a search. Doesn't
make that much sense to me since they're searching URLs in the first
place, but it got me to thinking ... Since my header and footer wrap
stand-alone web pages, could the htdig process be getting confused when
it hits the <HTML> tags in the "body" portion of my pages?
Anything reported from mod_layout along these lines?
